Religious Education Programs
The elements of a comprehensive catechesis embrace word, worship, service and witness. Each unit of the parish - family, religious education or school programs, and the variety of parish ministries must incorporate all of the components of catechesis - word, worship, service, and witness.
Preschool (3 & 4-year-olds) and Kindergarten
OLL School, Sunday 9:00–10:00 am
Classes are held during the 9:00 am Mass at Our Lady of the Lake School. Our program follows the Discovery series, published by W.H. Sadlier. Parents take turns assisting the catechists in the classroom throughout the year. An orientation meeting for the parents is held after the first class in the fall. At that time, parents receive a booklet listing the expectations, curriculum, and a schedule for the year.
Elementary School (Grades 1–6)
OLL School and Parish Office, Sunday 10:15–11:30 am
The Religious Education Program follows the Archdiocesan curriculum guidelines. In 2004 we adopted a new series of texts for 1st through 6th Grade, Faith First, published by Resources for Christian Learning (RCL). The series offers textbooks ,an excellent guide for students and catechists. RCL provides supplementary materials for parents online, which support the themes in the student book. The web site, www.faithfirst.com, offers online material to connect with Sunday liturgy, games for children of all ages, stories of saints, bible stories, spiritual growth resources, current issues, articles, catechist resources and much more.
Service and Support
We do our best to serve and support you in the faith formation of our children. We know that one hour of instruction per week for 25 weeks is a tiny fraction of the 100% of energy required on the life-long journey of becoming Christ-like. Nevertheless, if that hour reinforces the lived faith at home and in the parish, your
child will experience God in a community setting that you cannot provide at home.
Parent Involvement
Parent involvement in religious education is an indispensable component of our program. Parents are asked to accompany their children on the first day of class to meet the teachers and learn about the curriculum. Parents, who are not teaching in the classroom, are expected to participate in some aspect of the program during the year. There are many opportunities for involvement such as assisting with the Advent or Mardi Gras events, preparing for religion teachers' appreciation at the end of the year and several activities during the year. The opportunities for participation are listed on form enclosed in the registration packet.
Preparation for the Sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation
The parish provides a sacramental preparation program for the children enrolled in the parish school and religious education programs. The children in OLL School and Religious Education program us the same textbooks, parents attend the same meetings, family sessions and retreats. An orientation meeting for parents is held in the fall at the beginning of the preparation process.
