OUTREACH MINISTRIES

Seven Major Themes of Catholic Social Teaching

Dignity of the Human Person - "Human life is sacred and human dignity is the foundation of a moral vision for society."
Call to Family, Community - "Human beings are social beings. Our participation in our families, our communities, and in society is a reflection of our faith."
Rights and Responsibilities - "Human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met."
Option for the Poor - "A basic moral test of any society is how our most vulnerable members are faring."
Dignity of Work - "Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God's creation."
Solidarity - "We are one human family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences."

Care for Creation - -"We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God's creation."

Pastoral Care Ministry

The Pastoral Care Ministry serves the needs of the sick, chronically ill, and elderly within our parish.  Our goal is to provide both concern and compassion towards the individual's physical, emotional and spiritual needs. We offer sacraments of Eucharist and Anointing of the Sick, assist families and friends in providing for the needs of their loved ones, and provide information of referrals as needed. The Priests and lay ministers are on call for pastoral visits, to share Eucharist, prayer and parish news. We also strive to help find support within the community at large.

Those who serve in this ministry are specifically interviewed and trained adult parishioners to bring prayer, Eucharist to those in the hospital, nursing home or homebound.  Yearly formation and quarterly gatherings with other pastoral care workers is a standard, which we embrace.

For more information, please contact:
Fr. Robert Wolf at the Parish Office, 503-636-7687
frrobert@ollparish.com.

In case of an emergency, if calling after hours, stay on the line for answering service.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

prayer shawlA Prayer Shawl is a knitted, crochedted or quilted shawl. It is made to be given to a person in need, with the intent to shelter, comfort and give solace. Recipients may be experiencing times of stress, serious illness or medical treatment or bereavement -- any time comfort and prayer are needed. As each shawl is created, its maker is in prayer for the future recipient.

If you love knitting, crotcheting, sewing and have compassion for others, you may be a candidate for the Prayer Shawl ministry. Never crochet or knit before? We have a teacher! Or, consider a donation of yarn for some talented hands.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the first Saturday of the month at 10 AM in the Parish Office. For more information, contact Michelle Z. Mosgrove, 503-387-3066, or michelle@mosgrove.com.

Funeral Luncheon Ministry

Our parish has a ministry of presence and care to grieving families following the funeral Mass for their loved one. Family and friends are invited to the parish hall to have a lunch prepared by our parish community. It is a very gentle ministry in which you, as the volunteer, assist when you are able to help. If your time does not permit you to help at a specific funeral, then you do not sign up to help for that one.

We are always in need of people who want to help by doing any one or more of the following:

  • contributing food      • helping to prepare the lunch
  • serving the lunch      • cleaning after the lunch
  • doing the laundry

If you would like more information about the possibility of helping the Funeral Lunch Ministry, please contact Sr. Marilyn Barry, OSF at 503-657-0109 or at srmarilyn@ollparish.com.

St. Vincent de Paul Society

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic organization of lay persons, who minister, in a spirit of justice and charity and by person-to-person involvement, to those who are suffering. Each conference is self-supporting and operated solely by volunteers. The organization receives no assistance from Access, United Way, or any government programs. Salt & Light

The mission statement for Salt & Light is: To advance Our Lady of the Lake Parish toward deeper understanding and greater participation in social outreach activities based on Catholic Social Teaching.

In 1993, the U.S. Bishops stated, "... Our parishes should be measured by our help for the hungry, the homeless, the troubled and the alienated in our community and beyond....Catholic teaching calls us to serve those in need and to change structures which deny people their dignity and rights as children of God."

Salt and Light was born out of Our Lady of the Lake's response to this call. The committee includes a staff representative, members of the Pastoral Council, and members of the parish community.

Goals of Salt and Light Ministry

  • Have every parishioner understand and be aware of Catholic Social Teaching principles and role of Salt and Light ministry
  • Incorporate Catholic Social Teaching into parish worship, education, groups:  liturgies, religious education of children and adults, faith formation and sharing
  • Promote cooperation between groups within parish and help coordinate selected outreach activities across parish
  • Commit to and establish a plan to act locally, nationally, and internationally
