Children's Liturgy of the Word

Liturgy of the Word with Children is a celebration of the first part of the Mass - Liturgy of the Word - adapted for children. The adaptation includes:

  • Scripture readings adapted in a language children can understand.
  • Only 2 readings, the first and the third, are proclaimed.
  • The homily takes the form of a dialogue
  • Often audiovisuals are used in the reflection.

What it is not

  • a religion class
  • a craft time
  • a substitute for a religion class.

What is the Ideal Context for Liturgy of the Word with Children?

  • Brief reading of the Gospel the day before Sunday as a family
  • Short explanation of vocabulary children may not be familiar with
  • Inviting the children to listen carefully during the celebration
  • Speaking about it briefly following Mass
